Catching up on blog posts and some unicorn clothes

Maybe eventually I'll even get around to making a proper post about Naka-kon and my experience in the artist alley.

Anyways!! Fairy Kei and some silly stuff about my style today~ <3

If it isn't obvious enough by the name of the blog, UNICORNS. I don't think I can recall a time in my life where I had less than three articles of clothing that depicted unicorns. From sundresses as a kid, to that somewhat awkward airbrushed hoodie in middle school, to countless t-shirts. Double this if you count My Little Pony merchandise.

I also really like stuff that can be best described as CUTE AS SHIT. Poofy skirts and obnoxious headdresses and fairy clothes, essentially. I've been dabbling in Lolita (I have a good skirt and some accessories, but just purchased some sweet lolita items online too) and discovered the most glorious thing ever, Fairy Kei.
It's a perfect way to indulge in my inner 90's kid, and wear the most adorable clothes ever.
It can be as casual or obnoxiously street-fashion-ey as you want, and I already have a great number of things that suit this fashion. It's also not as strict as Lolita and seems much more logical for day to day wear (Since it can be so casual, and is just generally cutesy)
On my quest for cute clothes I have found SO MANY more unicorn things I need, XD
Seriously, google this stuff and they're unicorns everywhere.

I love things like this, but usually end up wearing a t-shirt and jeans or a plain skirt... I think this is because of function and sometimes my fashion tastes are so incredibly specific I can't find something that satisfies me so I just wear what's easy.
For instance, I went to Forever 21 to look for a navy blue and cream striped cardigan with 3/4 sleeves and brass buttons. Within this store were countless striped cardigans. There were more styles of striped cardigans in this store than I have pencils in my purse, which is totally a ton by the way. But none of them fit my description exactly so I went home and told myself I'd shop for one on the internet, but then totally forgot to but now I'm remembering it since I'm writing about it.
I animated this today (although I based the unicorn pixel art on another one I found on the web), and it's totally animated and I'm so happy with this stuff it's insane.
You'd think on this blog I'd have to redirect my thoughts to focus more on unicorns than I did pre-blog, but actually..... no. I really don't. They're sorta everywhere in my life, along with mermaids.
Also my family got a new puppy, and his name is Zhou Zhou. He's soooo cute! That leg behind him is our other dog... the difference in size between the two is totally hilarious >w<

Talking Fashion, talking with fashion

Cliques and labels can come from how you act, what you like or dislike, and how you present yourself to others.
Even if you don't label yourself, other people can infer things about you from your appearance. A perfect example of this I observed this weekend was a shopping mall. And ordinary mall were some people go to pick up items they need, spend an afternoon, or some people walk around just to be seen there.

Familiar to that last category, at least a few years ago, was the "Mall Goth" a teenager donning black clothes and eyeliner for shock value as well as expression. Goth is an interesting culture because the outward appearance both alienates the members, and guides them to other people similar to them. It's an interesting oxymoronic subculture.
Somehow, this subculture has evolved through the years into some other form of youths dressing for shock value and to be noticed while hanging out. At my recent mall excursion I saw no less than four girls with tutu's on over their skinny jeans. Other common sights were lense-less glasses and those scene haircuts. The "Mall whatever this thing is" above is all about being noticed and getting attention. I probably sound old and like I don't get teenagers (Even though I still am one) but the age we live in is one where it's very easy to become self possessed on the internet, and why not get even more attention irl by slapping a tutu on over your jeans?!

I would get this look if it were at a rave or party or something, but it really looks awful for just going to the mall in.
A lot of these themes seem common with international street fashion as well, which I guess in a way teenaged mall scene kid is expressing her need for attention in a way not so different than Lolitas. Fashion is great because it gives you some control over how people perceive you, which you can alter by altering the way you dress. Wearing showy things or dressing up can certainly give people a boost in self esteem. Even though just a paragraph ago I ranted about how ugly the tutu/jeans trend was, if you like it, WEAR IT. I have my opinions on how it looks, but that shouldn't really stop anyone from wearing what they like.
That being said, I have always worn what I liked, which usually means comfortable and colorful (though I did dabble in goth in early highschool, for all the coolness it was I really really like colorful things.) In highschool, I would foten wear weird baggy mom capri paints covered in paint, with striped socks pulled up so you couldn't see any of my legs, with hoodies and skater shoes. Super dweeby, I know... but it was highschool and I was happy.
Here's an outfit I would like right now, still casual t-shirt combo, but with a poofy skirt and my usual striped socks. It blends pretty well with a fashion known in Japan as Fairy Kei, and I'm looking to incorporate more things like this into my wardrobe. not to be noticed especially, but because these articles of clothing express who I am as a person and work well with my lifestyle.

Anyways... I bet your all sick of my little doodles I drew on the way home from the mall now, soooo...

Working on a new banner, in the meantime...

I've been Soooooo busy drawing and doing school stuff lately... I'm also working on a new banner to replace that cruddy little one I threw together in GIMP with my touchpad and some old doodles.
So since I don't have time for an informative or interesting post...
This unicorn has the most prettiest hair. My scanner cut off her nose and some of her bows and pretties though.
This Unicorn is the fattest. Ever.

And this unicorn is made of melting ice cream cones.

Have a great day everybody!

Dr. Sketchy's!

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the Kansas City branch of Dr. Sketchy and had a lot of fun. The models this time around were "The Whiskey Girls" a cowgirl themed dance troupe.

This Blue one was inspired by Jas, an amazing artist who I met last time I went to Dr. Sketchy's. My original idea was to draw in negative space, but I didn't end up doing that, I mostly was just surprised at how much my style changed when I deprived myself of an eraser.

For my last sketch of the night I was exhausted, and just did a pen drawing of a models face...

They start out with one minute gesture drawing poses, move on to five, then ten, then fifteen minute poses with some breaks in between. After the fifteen minutes they perform a short show, and then move on to two twenty minute poses.

In addition to the models, fellow artists have fun socializing and even drawing each other during breaks! There's also tea and really good food most of the time. And the host for the KC branch (Sunshine) is totally awesome. It's really a fun thing to do, aspiring artists should definitely check it out!

Saturday, February 5

It's late, I have pizza, you can have some stuff too.

Yesterday I meant to scan some drawings with Skye, instead I scanned my spider, Tiesto.
It turned out really cool, and he was incredibly patient and probably glad that all his eyes are on the top of his head
You see this? YOU SEE THIS? It's probably my favorite thing ever, matching hair and nails, aside from the yellow pinkie finger. And also the fact that the majority of my hair is actually green, just the face framing bits are turquoise like this. STILL. IT'S AWESOME. I DO IT AS MUCH AS I CAN.
It's impossible not to do a angle shot like this when you take a picture of yourself when you're hula hooping!
This is me lately... I love skirts and socks far too much.

I had cream cheese pizza for the first time about ten minutes ago too, and that was really good!

Decorating Sketchbooks

I meant to go over this a little bit yesterday, but somehow forgot. I wanted to give some of information on  how I decorated my sketchbook cover. After looking at examples online for inspiration, I even looked up on diarment's blog, which is visually fascinating, but didn't have any tutorials or guides (I am in total fascination of the textures he achieves!) So here's what I used to try to get the same look, even though it's not as impressive or metal looking
Bits of leftover cardboard, mod podge, permanant glue, and acrylic paint. All pictures here on a pretty gnarly looking couch. Also brushes of various sizes and iiiiiiimaaaaaaginaaaaation.
I doodled some concepts to start my design, but my plan eventually just boiled down to where I wanted the big pieces on the cover, and all the details were abstract and improvised.
The first thing I did was cut out the big pieces, then cut out a lot of little detailed ones to create the pattern on the left side. I arranged the pieces in the order they would look best, then glued them down starting from the biggest ones on the bottom. I did not yet glue the large pieces to the cover.

I primed the design with acrylic, then painted over that with white spray paint to smooth out errors in my design and prep it to be painted in the metal texture, which I did with a brush, and I looked over this tutorial even though I didn't have any nice model paints. I think I could go back and do the metal again later, since it doesn't look all that metal-ey, and it looks more painting-shades-of-grey-and-trying-to-even-shade-but-failing-with-a-big-fat-brush.
After painting the metal, I painted the entire cover of my sketchbook the violet color, it had originally been a dark red cardboard one from the clearance aisle. One of my last steps was to decide what to put in the semicircle, paint the moon and Sagittarius design, and glue them all down on the cover. After everything was in place I finished it with a layer of Mod Podge so the dried paint didn't feel gross and so it wouldn't scratch off. Thinking now, it would have been awesome to take in progress pictures...
Here's an in-progress shot of Skye's sketchbook, which he started with me but didn't finish. It's a painting of a zombie clawing through a door, except he hasn't done the door yet because it's popping up on a higher level than the zombie. His will look awesome once it's finished!!

I hope this post gave you some insight to the process, and maybe it even inspired you? (That'd be really cool, lololol) Buuuuut now I gotta go back to working on my cosplays for the upcoming Naka-koooon X3

Middle of the week weekend

My classes were canceled two and a half days this week! Unfortunately, I'd gone to my parents house the weekend previously, and left my laptop charger there... I was *mostly* without a computer this whole week!!

This forced me to actually DO things, ha ha. I had some time on my hands to finish projects I had lying around and also to brainstorm a little bit for blog content (Exciting!)
Anyways, this week I was able to decorate my sketchbook cover in a way that I'd been envying/considering/planning for a long time. A little steampunk thing going on, inspired by the fabulous artist Diarment on deviantart! diarment's galleryLook at all those fabulous things!!
Anyways, here's mine:

I was happy to notice it looks a lot like the spellbook I used to draw my Dungeons and Dragons wizard character with X3 And yes... I don't have  a camera. Most pictures I take for this blog have a very eloquent system of photography with the use of a webcam and me trying really hard not to cast an awkward shadow with my arm. It goes something like this:
And Hey look! First drawing I've posted here too!

Other fun snow day things were making and trying snow ice cream for the first time (It was really easy! Snow, vitamen D milk, vanilla flavoring, and we put cocoa powder in ours to make it chocolate flavored) Hula-hooping and climbing around indoors like monkeys, playing dorm room "Floor is Lava" and lots of drawing and Halo <3~
What a great weekend in the middle of the week!

Sparkly cupcakes and fairy glitter!

Blogging adventures!

Blogs are an interesting thing huh?
They give readers a glimpse at another person's life and an audience to writers that wouldn't normally have one. This can be a double edged sword... It seems like when a lot of young writers find themselves with an audience they write for that audience, instead of for themselves (I suspect that this is the reason there are so many 'Twilight' knock-offs on fictionpress.com...)

My hope for this blog is to share awesome things in my life, cool stuff I find on the internet sometimes, artwork, and things that make me happy in hopes they'll make you happy. My blog inspiration and idols are:
Neil Gaiman
Gala Darling
And finally, Bei Bad Girl
I really really admire these people and their fantastic blogging style, but I'll try as hard as possible not to emulate them too much or copy their swagger. After all, I'm ME. If I tried to copy them there would be no point. So with that said

Welcome to All Unicorns All the Time!
